WORKING IN CAYMAN If you intend to come and work in Cayman, you require a work permit to be issued by department of immigration, if you are not a Caymanian or you do not have Caymanian status. Your employer needs to apply for the work permit. But you must fill out all the required application forms. The set of application form includes:
- Application Form
- Police Clearance Certificate
- Passport size photographs ( 2 face and 1 profile)
- Medical Questionnaire completed. (Should be not more than 3 months old)
- Accommodation form.

Persons applying for a work permit must note that according to the he new immigration law the length of period for which a work permit can be granted in been extended, setting a time period an applicant can continuously remain in Cayman Island on work permit.
Work permits are initially issued for 1 year. Temporary work permits, covering a period of 3 months or up to 6 months have been abolished. Minimum period for which a temporary work permit can be issued is 6 months. As these temporary work permits are not renewable, care should be taken when application is made to the department of immigration. It may be noted that 1 year work permit is not a temporary work permit. A temporary (6 months) work permit cannot be converted into a one year work permit. Employers must apply for One year work permit before the expiry of temporary work permit.
The full length of time a person can work continuously in Cayman Island on work permit is 7 years. You need to leave Cayman Island for 2 years, at least, if you need to get a new work permit issued. If you have been issued a work permit under “Business Staffing Plan” board of immigration may grant one year more extension, you will become an ‘Exempted Employee’ , you will cover full 8 years which will make you eligible to make an application for permanent residency.
