GETTING MARRIED IN CAYMAN

Approximately 500 couples yearly, take their legal vows on our three islands.
Getting married in Cayman Islands is simpler process, marriage officer makes an application for a special marriage license and the same is granted by the Governor.
Laws concerning marriage in The Cayman Islands are: The Marriage Law, Chapter 92; The Marriage (Amendment) Law, 1978; and The Marriage (Amendment) Law, 1994. Brief guidance about getting married in Cayman is given below:
Visitors or Non Residents can get married the day they arrive in Cayman, this included visitors who arrive by curse ships also. Proper documents are needed by the Governor who grants a special license for the couple to get married. These documents include proof of age (minimum legal age for getting married without parents consent is 18 years, nationality, and documentation shown proof of your visit proving visitor or passenger of curse ship. Incase of remarriage proof of legal divorce degree or death certificate in case spouse’s death.
While applying both persons, must give their full names, occupations, permanent addresses and any temporary address, if it exists. Name of marriage office, also stating if either of the party has been previously married and also should confirm that there is no lawful hindrance in the intended marriage.
The documents required are:
- Proof of identity, such as an original or certified birth certificate or passport;
- Cayman Islands international embarkation/disembarkation card or ship's boarding pass;
- Certified or original copies of divorce decrees/death certificates.
Residents, however, have to file an application. Marriage certificate can be issue by either civil registrar or minister of religion. On the same date both applicants should must notify the civil registrar about their intention of getting married, this should be at least 15 day prior the date of marriage, by a single notice, if they live in the same district. In case, one of the applicants is not living in the same district or island, single notice by the other is sufficient.
Registrar will satisfy herself/himself after displaying the notice for 7 days, that no objection has been received and may issue a marriage certificate, which must be reproduced at the time of marriage. Marriage must take place within the three months of issuance of certificate. Marriages must take place between 6 a.m. and 8 p.m. and must be attended by the Marriage office and 2 witnesses.
Applicants may choose to apply for marriage certificate in person or through marriage officer, with all the required documents. Applicants will have to pay the following fee and charges while making the application:
CI$150 (US$180), $10 postage stamp along with the documents; stamps can be purchased from the post office or from the Government offices. Couple can file the application with Deputy Chief Secretary's office, on the third floor of the Government Administration Building, Grand Cayman, telephone 345-244-2222; or at the District Commissioner's office, Government Administration Building, Cayman Brac, Telephone 345-948-2222.
